The campsite is situated in the centre of a mixed arable and livestock family farm. Duncan Coward’s family have farmed in the Chalke Valley for nearly 100 years, and the campsite is a family run enterprise by Duncan and Fiona, and their son Hector.
The site is surrounded by pasture, arable fields and a copse containing many species of trees. On site is a large pond teeming with wildlife. It is the epitome of tranquility, almost entirely silent save for the sounds of nature, a place where you can unwind and forget the hustle and bustle of modern day living for a few days. There is no electricity on site, so no ‘mod cons’ or distractions!
Our family and friends have enjoyed many evenings having a sun-downer by the pond, watching the sun set, and we now hope that others will enjoy the experience, and have as much pleasure out of it as we have!
We are Duncan and Fiona Coward, and we have been married since 1990. We have three grown-up children, Hector, George and Archie.
We farm the land with cattle, sheep, occasionally pigs, and arable crops. We have just over 200 acres. I (Fiona), together with Hector, started Chalke Valley Camping in 2015 with just two tents, and that season went so well we decided to expand to five bell tents the following year.
In December 2015, I was taken seriously ill with an AVM (a type of aneurysm) and after a couple of brain operations and nearly a year in hospital, have been left with right-sided weakness, no longer able to walk. A friend very generously bought me an all-terrain buggy so that I could still get down to the campsite and round the farm, which has totally transformed my life!
We have now had three seasons and are up to capacity with six tents. Our joint role is the “meet and greet” (which Duncan is very good at!). Duncan's role is generally keeping the site up together, the grass short and the logs plentiful! Despite not being able to do any of the physical side, I have continued to help Hector respond to online bookings and queries.
Along with our two dogs, Pip (Jack Russell) and Belle (Collie) we look forward to meeting and welcoming our guests!
